Obituary of Carl Burlas
Carl Daniel Burlas, 84, of Latrobe, passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 in Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital, Greensburg. He was born May 25, 1933 in Unity Township, a son of the late John A. and Bertha (Nessler) Burlas.
Carl was a 1955 graduate of St. Vincent College where he was a standout basketball player and captain of the basketball team. When he was playing he was affectionately known as “Mighty Mite” and was later inducted into the St. Vincent Athletic Hall of Fame and was recognized as a St. Vincent Letterman of Distinction. He served in the United States Marine Corps.
Carl was a faithful member of St. Vincent Basilica Parish where he served as a Eucharistic minister and sang in the funeral choir. He also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. Spending time with his family and practicing his Roman Catholic faith were very important to Carl, which was evident to all of his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Cordelia (Miller) Burlas, a son, Mark H. Burlas, a daughter-in-law, Stacy A. Burlas, and siblings: Marie Fajt, Donald Burlas, Regis Burlas, Phillip Burlas, Father Anthony Burlas, O.S.B., and infant John A. Burlas II.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte A. (Zakour) Burlas, four children: Mary Kae Vacsulka (Bob) of Saltsburg, John A. Burlas III (Debbie) of Clarksburg, WVA, Michael M. Burlas (Jeannie) of Ligonier, and Stephen J. Burlas of Jeannette, three stepsons: Douglas K. Miller of Harpers Ferry, WVA, Scott N. Miller (Karen) of New Market, MD, and Craig R. Miller of El Jebel, CO, 21 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great grandchild on the way, a sister, Rita Daugherty of Greensburg, a brother, Thomas Burlas (Pat) of Greensburg, three brothers-in-law: Richard Zakour (Colleen), Melvin Miller (Joanie), and Norman Miller, and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no funeral home visitation. Friends and family are all welcome to a funeral mass to be celebrated on Friday, Nov. 24th at 10:00 AM in St. Vincent Basilica, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe. Interment will be in St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent Archabbey designated for Seminary Education, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650.
