Obituary of Joyce Sproch
Joyce Lorraine Sproch, formerly of Greensburg, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 in Lafayette Manor, Uniontown. She was born in Allentown, PA, daughter of the late George W. and Lucy (Schuon) Rose.
A devoted wife and mother, Joyce was happiest when spending time together with her family and friends and entertaining in her home. She loved her husband and children deeply. She said that her brother, Jack, was her best friend and his wife, Myrtle, was the sister she never had but always longed for. She was a Registered Nurse, a graduate of the Nursing School of Jefferson Medical College class of 1942, and married her beloved husband Tom after his graduation from Jefferson. Within a few years after living as an army doctor's wife, she and the family settled in Latrobe, her husband's hometown. While raising her children, besides being an excellent cook and homemaker, she also worked as a private duty nurse and was a long time volunteer for the Red Cross and local clinics.
She loved music and was an organist and singer at Saint Vincent Parish Sunday mass for many years. She grew up dancing to live big bands, and could sing along to just about any song played on the radio. Saturday nights for many years of their marriage, she and her husband would go dancing "until their feet fell off". For their parties, the dining room rug was rolled up so their guests could dance the night away.
Joyce loved travelling the world with her husband. After his passing, her travels continued with her friends and especially her "sister" Myrtle. She disliked the cold Pennsylvania winters and in later years dodged them for the warmth of the Caribbean and Florida.
She had no fear of trying. In her seventies, she attended local colleges and took classes in computers and writing, and wrote beautiful stories. Into her eighties she kept active, providing help and comfort for her ailing and much beloved daughter Carol. All who knew her will dearly miss her wit, wisdom and generous love.
Joyce's family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the wonderful caregivers and all of the staff at Lafayette Manor for the last seven years of her life.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas M. Sproch Sr.; a daughter, Carol Sproch; a brother, John (Jack) H. Rose; and niece, Joy (Rose) Inselmini.
Joyce is survived by three children: Mary (Stephen) Rodkey, Ellen (Patrick) Daugherty, and Thomas (Paulette) Sproch Jr.; grandchildren Gavin (Jennifer) Rodkey, Scott (Meredith) Rodkey, Eric (Lisa) Schoonmaker, and Andrew (Glen) Schoonmaker; great-grandchildren Pepper and Rex Rodkey, and Evan Schoonmaker; and numerous nieces and nephews and that she cared for dearly.
