Obituary of Jay Downs

Jay E. Downs, 92, of Latrobe, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2018 at his home. He was born December 29, 1925, in Irwin, PA, a son of the late George and Gertrude (Porch) Downs.

Jay was a veteran of World War II where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was always proud of his service during that battle and never forgot the combat pin that was given to him personally by General George S. Patton. Prior to his retirement in 1988, he was employed by PPG Industries for over 35 years. He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 515 and the Latrobe V.F.W Post 3414. He was a former member of the Pleasant Unity V.F.W Post 8643 where he served as commander and was also on the Honor Guard. Jay’s favorite pastimes included travelling and cars. He was known to be able to fix absolutely anything and formerly worked part-time fixing televisions.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah L. (Smith) Downs, and his sister, Bernice “Bunce” Lemmon. He is survived by his son, Terry J. Downs of Latrobe; his sister, Donna Downs; two sisters-in-law, Jane Litzinger and Helen Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received Wednesday from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM in the Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home, Inc. 1500 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 AM in the funeral home chapel with his pastor, the Rev. Jeffrey L. Schock officiating. Interment with full military honors accorded by the Armbrust Veterans Association Honor Guard will follow in Unity Cemetery, 114 Chapel Ln, Latrobe, PA 15650.
