Obituary of Katharine M. Hennessy
Katharine “Katie” Marie Hennessy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, formerly of Unity Township, passed away after a brief illness on July 25, 2018 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.
Katie was an energetic, caring, loving person and always had a smile for everyone. She could connect with every person she met, especially those who had difficulty connecting with others. She greatly enjoyed spending time at the beach which led to her relocation to Virginia Beach about a year ago. She loved family vacations, particularly to Hilton Head Island, and started the families’ annual water gun fights at the beach.
Katie was born on June 30, 1983 in Akron, Ohio, a daughter of Daniel G. Hennessy of Unity Township and the late Susan F. (Biernacki) Hennessy who passed away on June 15th of this year. She spent most of her youth growing up in Unity Township and graduated from Greater Latrobe Senior High school in 2001. Katie received her Bachelor’s degree in Art Education from Millersville University of Millersville, Pennsylvania in 2006 and a Master of Arts in Art Therapy with a specialization in Counseling from Seton Hill University of Greensburg, Pennsylvania in 2012. She was employed as a counselor and art therapist and cared deeply for all that she counseled, especially teenagers.
In addition to her mother, Susan, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Stanley E. Biernacki and her paternal grandparents, Bernard J. and Alice M. Hennessy. In addition to her father, Daniel, she is survived by her fiancé, Jordan Rodrigues of Murrysville, her grandmother, Stella S. (Sondej) Biernacki of Waldwick, New Jersey, three siblings, Sean Hennessy and his spouse, Shirlea of Centreville, Virginia, Alyssa Goetz and her spouse, Jackson Goetz of Irwin and Sarah Hennessy of Unity Township, her nephew, Aidan Hennessy and nieces, Madison Hennessy and Isabella and Delaney Goetz. She is also survived by numerous other family members.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 on Sunday, July 29th in Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home, Inc., 1500 Ligonier Street, Latrobe, PA 15650. The Divine Mercy Chaplet will be prayed at 1:45 PM on Sunday in the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10AM on Monday, July 30th in St. Vincent Basilica, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA, 15650. Everyone please go directly to the basilica. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Wesley Family Services, 3230 William Pitt Way, Pittsburgh, PA 15238 specifically targeting the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Program of Westmoreland County or online at www.wfspa.org.
