Obituary of Richard Louis Jim
Richard Louis Jim, 89, a lifelong resident of Latrobe, passed away Tuesday, October 23, 2018 in Excela Health Latrobe Hospital. He was born October 17, 1929 in Latrobe, a son of the late Charles J. and Rose C. (Margo) Jim.
Richard was a 1948 graduate of Latrobe High School. He attended St. Vincent College for 1 year in pre-engineering, and received his Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1950. In 1951 he entered the first Naval Officer Candidate School Class in Newport Rhode Island, served active duty in the US Navy, and retired as USNR Lieutenant Commander. Richard started Law School in 1954 at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated with a Bachelor of Law in 1957. He furthered his education in 1985 receiving his Masters in Public Management from Carnegie Mellon University. He would joke about wanting to be an engineer with a legal background but instead became an attorney with an engineering background.
Mr. Jim began his career in 1957 and has served the area as a private practice attorney until his passing. He was a member of the Pennsylvania, Westmoreland County and Allegheny County Bar Associations. He served as solicitor for the Latrobe Municipal Authority, Westmoreland Federal Savings and Loan Association, and the Armstrong County Home Rule Study Commission.
He proudly served as a Latrobe City Council member, was Deputy Mayor for two years, and served as Director of Latrobe Community Development. Richard was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church where he served as an usher. He was also a member of the Thomas B. Anderson American Legion Post 515, and the Latrobe Sons of Italy. An avid tennis player, he was a Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles Champion at Latrobe Country Club. His partner in Mixed Doubles was his wife, Posy. He also enjoyed playing Bridge, gardening, and fishing, but most importantly, spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Charles W. Jim, his sister, Madeline M. Williams, and his brother, Charles J. Jim, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of over 53 years, Rosemary “Posy” (Lechman) Jim, his daughter Aimee R. Jim Esq. of Greensburg, his son , Bernard L. Jim, Ph.D., and his wife, Karen, of University Heights, OH, a grandson Anthony Richard Jim, and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received Thursday, Oct, 25th from 3 until 6 PM in the Hartman-Graziano Funeral Home, Inc., 1500 Ligonier Street, Latrobe. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, Oct. 26th at 10 AM in Holy Family Church, 1200 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Interment will follow in St. Vincent Cemetery.
